Is anyone else getting the impression that the only reason Philip proposed to Melanie was to see what kind of rise he could get out of his family? It didn't occur to me until he showed up to make his grand announcement at the mansion - but it definitely felt that way as he watched and waited for the reactions from Victor and Kate, in particular.

I LIKE this scenario. It would explain a lot, especially the suddenness. Melanie's eagerness (well, milquetoast eagerness) to accept can be explained by her immaturity and resignation that she blew it with Nathan because she couldn't sheist or get off the pot between the two.

Even as a Phelony fan, this is what I saw. I've said in the past that I didn't think Phelony was "endgame" but IMO Stephanie is a thousand times better with Nathan, all they have to do is punch up his character and put them in a good s/l, hell maybe throw in some good dialogue while they're at it. Stephanie has a 1000 watt smile when she looks at Nathan, she admires him and I think she thinks he's still pliable enough to mold him into whatever man she wants. The kiss print she left on his cheek was too cute.

I think Phillip/Stephanie/Melanie/Nathan story is another big DAYS longterm tortured quadranble like Lucas/Sami/Carrie/Austin or Belle/Philip/Shawn/Mimi, where everyone eventually sleeps and even marries everyone, someone gets pregnant but we donīt know the father, and even if there is an end game (Steph/Phillip, Nathan/Mel), it will take months or years to get there. Iīm already sure the wedding will go through, Nathan will may try to stop it but Stephanie will secretly sabbotage his attempt. And after the wedding. itīs only a matter of time till Phillip/Steph have some week moment and ends having sex again. (12/28 show makes it clear they still have feelings for each other) For a while I thought the writers got lost or decided to change their plans, but now it seems it was all just a setup for much bigger fun next year. The wedding is just a beginning.

If they do then that is a HUGE mistake, imo. For one, it has already been done. Second, I am already sick of the back and forth with these characters. I'm all for characters being torn, or even feeling like they are getting the shit end of the stick* but Days makes the mistake that having the characters break up for 180x's as a push-pull dynamic. I'm already tired of Melanie having this far off look, probablly pining away for Nathan, not to mention their heavy handed attempt of making Melanie more sympathetic to the audience. Why did she answer her cell phone when she had plans? I get that it's to show the start of a struggle between Mel and Phil and her career but there are other ways to show that.

Also, that Shelle-Phelle stuff sucked. Shawn whinned about not having money, Phillip whinned about being born with a silver spoon in his mouth and Belle was so wishywasy that I wondered what anyone saw in one another.

*ETA: Instead of the back and forth stuff, I'd rather that Phillip (and even Melanie) begin to resent one another and fight like cats and dogs, their marriage crumble by using the cards that are already stacked against him (the age difference, career, starting a family, Viv/Kate/Vic, etc.) and then they could have their endgame couples.

Interesting comparisons, since Shawn and Belle and Austin and Carrie have sailed off into their respective sunsets and Mimi and Lucas are no longer on the show. Of those six people, only Farah Fath left voluntarily as I recall. Why would TPTB try to do something again that apparently wasn't popular enough the first and second time around? Personally I never thought the Lumi/Carrie/Austin quad was believable for one second because I never believed that Austin had a spark of romantic interest in Sami, and Carrie and Lucas were my previous definition of anti-chem before Chloe and Lucas. The one nice thing I will say about this quad is that I do think Mark Hapka has a lot of chemistry with Shelley Hennig and to a lesser extent with MB. I don't care enough about the character of Nathan to be bothered by him hooking up with Melanie permanently or whatever passes for permanently on this show, so therefore a Nathan/Melanie duo doesn't affect me. It's putting Philip in that mix that is so jarring for me.

I just have to say - Sami is dressed HORRIBLY once again in the Christmas episode! What's with the too-short scarf and too-tight t-shirts? Maybe DAYS needs to invest in some sizes other than extra small...
I thought she looked like the Whoo-HO from Hootersville in that get-up.

Am I the only one who hated those quads? Am I the only one who thought Lucas/Sami/Carrie/Austin lasting for 10+ years while Belle/Philip/Shawn/Mimi introduced us to a whole new science of "who's the daddy" mixup using petri dishes and cherry poppin sex that happens in a blizzard but is immediately forgotten by BOTH parties (how bad does sex have to be for that to happen?) was what killed Days in so many (including me)'s opinions? Nothing enraged me more then to turn on the tv on after being gone from days for over a decade to still see Sami mooning after Austin who is in love with Carrie who loves him but is with Lucas for reasons no one can understand?

Except of course dena must take it in a whole new direction and have Philip be dumbed down so he can hang out with people far too young for him. I let it go for Stephanie since the pairing should have worked given the family history and how rich the storylines could have been (though the writing monkeys managed to screw that up with their BFF routine between Stephanie and Philip that made no sense whatsoever) but I admit it's borderline. Now he's all hot and ready for a girl (emphasis on girl) who's most interest quality is she is SCREWED UP. Why yes, that's a wonderful foundation for a couple to build on, especially given her all her years of experience in life, occupation and relationships. Oh wait, she has none because she just was able to vote LAST YEAR. Now we get to throw Nathan and Stephanie in that coupling because if there is one thing you can count on from Days is to make a horrific couple into an outrageous quad.

It's why soaps are failing today. Instead of trying to expand their current (and in some cases talented cast) by offering the characters chances to grow, mature and move into new directions, they decide it's better to let them fall back onto the same old tired formulas we've seen over and over again. Even if a character has gone through the exact same quad situation himself. I love how Philip never learned from his experiences with Belle and Shawn so let's have him repeat the process by getting involved in the similar situations but a whole younger generation just makes me proud as a Days viewer.

Maybe I can expect to see Vivian deciding to get back at Carly for her crimes against their family by BURYING HER ALIVE! We can also discover that strangely EJ and Brady have matching tattoos which will link up to some mystery as it winds up Nicole has the same one (perhaps a dagger). Finally, we can add a mystery on a cruiseship where the ship sinks and everyone must climb into a liferaft. At least those stories were of quality and may be worth repeating.

:cheer: ITA. You are not alone in your assessment of how the show keeps repeating the same formula with substitutions. You are so right on with your point of how this has impacted the destruction of daytime. I give DAYS props for their recent ratings surge. However, in the past, DAYS and the other soaps garnered high ratings because of rich storylines and strong duos. Nowadays, there is no reason whatsoever to beccome dedicated to a pairing. Viewers have a 1% chance of actually getting the pairing that they want for the long haul. If a couple makes it six months, thank your lucky stars because the love affair will soon be over. Each and every fan has a favorite duo and tend to disagree on who they think is hot or not. It's all in the eye of the beholder, of course. Writers today fail to realize that when crafting these triangles and quadrangles, no fan is really deriving any satisfaction from their twisted tales. One week the storyline may play in this fanbase's corner while swinging to the next fanbase's in the next instance. Storylines such as the Cruise of Deception and Carly Buried Alive were highly successful because of their adventurous qualities and romances. During the Cruise of Deception, we had Jack/Jenn, Bo/Hope, and John/Isabella. There were no angles involved. Ratings went through the roof (And I'm not talking about a 3.1 million either!). Currently, soaps are disappearing off the radar like clock work. It's devastating because I grew up watching soaps with my grandmother and mother. So, to see them slide off one by one is heartbreaking. While soaps have to contend with cable tv, the web, and other advances in technology, I have one solution: make us want to watch. Often, that's what they fail to do. I challenge the writers to pick one pairing and go with it. Someone has got to lose and not every fan will be happy. And it's totally impossible for everyone to be pleased at once. So, I agree. I simply detest all these triangles and quads.

That's the thing, though. We can't have couples because the era of the supercouple is over, remember? Better to play the triangles and quads. That way you can't have any rooting interest in anyone. ;)
